Murder in Coweta County for a New Generation

The book Murder in Coweta County was published almost 50 years ago but the mystery and intrigue of this true life murder mystery continues to grip our imagination, as natives of Coweta County and as southerners in general.

The movie adaptation starring Andy Griffith, Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash released in 1983 brought attention to the 1948 murder of Wilson Turner and the ensuing cover up by the perpetrator and wealthy land owner John Wallace.

Although many Coweta natives are familiar with the crime, book, and movie, there is a new generation of Cowetans who are not.

Despite its grisly nature, Murder in Coweta County is a huge part of Coweta County and Troup County history, and one that younger generations should learn about, not only for the historical significance but also for the important racial and socioeconomic lessons that can be learned.

The Newnan Carnegie Library will be hosting a free community showing of Murder in Coweta County on Saturday September 27th at 6:30 pm complete with popcorn. This is the perfect chance to connect with your community and get acquainted with this famous story.

***The film is NOT RATED, however it does contain frightening and intense scenes, alcohol and smoking, violence, profanity, and nudity.
