Craving a holiday road trip this year? The Blue Ridge Mountains provide a perfect change of scenery that’s not too far from home, and in the heart of the Blue Ridge is Asheville, NC, where Christmas magic abounds from November through January.
Only a few hours' drive from Newnan, Asheville makes for a great day trip or weekend getaway with fun holiday activities for the whole family. Here are just a few ways to spend the day exploring the Christmas magic of Asheville.
Christmas at Biltmore
It’s hard to mention Asheville without including Biltmore, and why would you want to? During Christmas, Biltmore becomes even more glorious as the grounds and halls fill with Christmas trees, lights, music, and more.
Candlelight Christmas at Biltmore is an unforgettable holiday experience that immerses you in the beauty of Biltmore and the glory of Christmas. Carriage rides, gourmet meals, wine tastings, carols, and the estate turned into a Christmas wonderland.
The National Gingerbread House Competition
Gingerbread as art? The National Gingerbread House Competition is hosted at the Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville each year, and you have never seen gingerbread like this! During this event, gingerbread truly becomes an art form as artisans from around the world submit stunning gingerbread creations that are on display at the Omni Grove from November through January.
Visitors can enjoy these festive works of art, but be sure to plan according to the display schedule, as the gingerbread house displays aren’t open to the public every day. Also be sure to check out other holiday events at the Omni Grove during the holiday season.
Ice Skating at Asheville Yards
Ice skating in Asheville is the best way to have fun even when there is a chill in the air.
Asheville Yards transforms into a holiday hangout destination with an outdoor ice skating rink, festive photo ops, hot chocolate, Christmas cocktails, and more. Holiday music fills the air while friends and families make lasting memories. Admission is required if skating, but if you just want to hang out without skating, admission is free.
The Winter Wonder Walk
Holiday adventure abounds at the Adventure Center of Asheville during the Annual Winter Wonder Walk. This outdoor event features a live-action immersive story-walk through an outdoor trail filled with live characters, lights, and a special appearance by Jack Frost.
Search for Jack Frost and the Sugar Plum Fairy and many other wonderful characters, but be careful; there could be a snowball fight along the way. Warm up before or after the walk in heated tents hosting a holiday market filled with unique gifts, delicious concessions, hot chocolate, tasty treats, or get cozy around the bonfire while creating s'mores.
