Coweta Prose: Canopy of Trees

I often wonder if some, that are still standing, were here then.

These mighty live oak perhaps some centuries ago. 

When the pace of life was simple and slower.

The birth of this nation was on the horizon yet to be fully seen.

And as I walk under the branches of their shade,

Beholding their limbs stretching to the sky, reaching for light and life, 

In wonder of their enormous trunks – girth – I ponder, what have they seen all these years?

Those who honored the earth revered you, I think to myself, no doubt.

The indigenous people who first met you.

And as I take in this sight of such majesty,

I’m in awe of the invitation that’s given to me.

To sit awhile under a canopy of trees.

They welcome me and ask me to stay and partake of the beauty all around me.

Take it all in, I do. Breathing in the fresh, cool Spring air.

Hearing the buzz and chirps of happy birds, bugs and squirrels that make their homes in them.  

Marveling under Nature’s umbrella, I feel a sense of calm, shelter and genuine peacefulness.

My heart is grateful to God for placing them here.

Faithfully, they produce fresh new leaves – year after year.

There’s anticipation and excitement knowing this is something beautiful to count on time and time again.

Their trunks tell me stories of how long they've endured, too,

in seasons of drought and also in times of plenty.   

Withstanding intense storms and harsh winters, while gently swaying in warm summer breezes.

Their breathtaking changes in the fall leave me spellbound,

Exploding in vibrant arrays of crimson, gold and rust in a kaleidoscope of autumn colors.

No doubt, they have persevered throughout all seasons.

Much like our nation.

May America always stand strong, confident, resilient and steadfast as these trees.

As a timeless symbol of hope for many.
